Leading 501cTech brings together Julie Chapman’s two great passions — growing technology organizations and making the world a better place. While she began her career working with nonprofits, she spent the next 20 years working in the technology industry after receiving her M.B.A. from Columbia University. She worked at MCI in the early days of MCI Mail with industry luminaries such as Vint Cerf, founded a successful marketing firm, and worked as an executive in venture-backed startups including job site CareerBuilder.com and 86.com, an e-commerce provider for the food service industry.
Julie received the prestigious Exponent Award from the Meyer Foundation in 2008. She is also a member of Leadership Greater Washington, Class of 2009. She is active in the community as a member of the board of directors of both the Potomac Conservancy, where she co-chairs the development committee, and the District of Columbia Primary Care Association. In her spare time, she is an avid adventure traveler, practices Pilates and yoga, cooks for her friends, tends her “square-foot garden” and spends time with her husband, David Cushing, and her 100-pound poodle, Blackjack. She is the extremely proud parent of two daughters, Kate and Anna, and is given to showing their pictures on her iPhone with just the smallest amount of encouragement.
Favorite tech tool: “My IPAD. The Apps are amazing and I love how graphics look on the screen.”
Favorite recipe: “Apple pie made with my great grandmother’s recipe. The apples have to be sliced extra thin and the secret ingredient to the perfect crust is lard. Shhh!”
Fun Fact: Julie once worked as a whitewater river guide on the American River in California.
